Foundations
After experiencing the early magic of GPT-3, we saw the potential to revolutionise how software is built. A pivotal YC interview changed our trajectory: rather than building greenfield tools, we decided to tackle the ultimate challenge of an AI software engineer that could operate in messy, existing codebases.
Capturing human engineering
We realised early models lacked the context and reasoning to be true software engineers. To bridge the gap, we built a custom keylogger to record our own engineers at work, capturing the exact steps humans take to navigate and edit code. We became pioneers in fine-tuning models to mimic true developer behaviour, corresponding with OpenAI for early access to longer context windows.
Shattering benchmarks
As Alpha design partners for GPT-4 Turbo, we trained our proprietary dataset and achieved a historic 30% on SWE-bench, crushing the previous record.
Regulated frontier
While big labs raced to build consumer coding tools, we established our moat. Driven by demand from a major investment bank, we successfully fine-tuned an open source model to operate completely air-gapped on-premises. Cosine became the go-to AI software engineer for environments sitting behind strict firewalls - finance, healthcare, and defence. We built the complex Kubernetes infrastructure and specialised post-training pipelines required to deliver world-class AI to organisations that are entirely cut off from the public cloud.
Sovereign intelligence
Shortly after releasing our first Lumen models, we earned our way up to our most ambitious project yet. Leveraging years of proprietary data curation, algorithms, and infrastructure expertise, we are now building the UK’s sovereign AI model from the ground up alongside a landmark industry coalition. We are ensuring that nations and critical enterprises have independent, secure, and state-of-the-art AI engineering capabilities.
